Legend of Amber

In the Baltics, Amber is often called Tears of the Gods. According to legend, there was once a beautiful mermaid Jurate who fell in love with a mortal man, Kastytis. Enraged by their illegitimate love, Jurate’s father, god of the sea, created a horrible storm, sunk Kastytis’ ship and broke Jurate’s amber castle. Ever since, Jurate’s tears of amber and shards of her broken castle wash up on the shores of the sea.
